Genre as a Space of Possibles

The first snippet from my preparation for my dissertation defense, I here investigate some of the potential worth of combining Genette’s concept of transtextuality with that of Bourdieu’s space of possibles.

One of the problems when working with genre, is how to draw up a boundary not just for which works belong within the genre, but also the methodology and object of study. How do we explain changes and developments in a genre; only from a purely formalist point of view, ie. genre as autonomous field, or do we instead take into accounts of economy, technological developments, etc?
